What it is

The explanation

Core Web Vitals are three measurements Google uses to judge how a page feels to a visitor. LCP measures how long it takes for the largest element to appear. INP measures how quickly the page responds when somebody clicks. CLS measures how much the content jumps around while loading.

They are measured on real visitors in Chrome, not in a test environment, and they appear in Google Search Console.

Why it might matter to you

4 points
  • They count towards ranking. Not heavily enough to rescue poor content, but enough to decide between two comparable pages.
  • They measure what visitors already feel anyway: a page that jumps while you are trying to click is irritating whether or not Google existed.
  • CLS is the most neglected of the three and often the easiest to fix — usually images without stated dimensions, or a font arriving late.
  • The figures Search Console shows lag reality: expect four weeks before an improvement becomes visible.

How we handle it

In practice

On this site CLS is exactly zero on every page. That is not an accident: the typeface is served from our own domain and preloaded, because otherwise the Dutch pages shifted the moment it arrived and a line of text went from two lines to one. That cost a hundred milliseconds of load time and bought a page that stays still.
