What it is

The explanation

A landing page is a page built for one purpose: to show somebody arriving from an advertisement, a mailing or a specific search exactly what they came for, and move them to one action.

What separates it from an ordinary page is what is not on it. No sprawling menu, no four other services, no distraction — only the offer and the button.

Why it might matter to you

4 points
  • A campaign pointing at your homepage wastes a large part of the budget: the visitor has to find the offer they clicked on themselves.
  • The message in the advertisement and the headline on the page should say the same thing. If they differ, the visitor clicks back before reading.
  • One action per page. Two equally weighted buttons produce less than one clear one.
  • A landing page is only useful once it is measured. Without measurement you cannot tell whether the campaign paid for itself.

How we handle it

In practice

For a campaign we build the page and the measurement together, so week one is measurable rather than discovering afterwards that nobody knows what it produced. It is also why we would rather deliver one good landing page than five mediocre ones.
